Heb 12:2 – Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
We overcome our sins by practising and doing contrary to the lifestyle that sponsors that sinful habit. That is what it means to look unto Jesus as the author and finisher of our faith in our quest to overcoming our sins. That is to say, you walk in victory over your sins by doing contrary to what you used to do that always led you to commit that sin. For example, you are a person who is strongly addicted to listening to lust-filled worldly songs that cause you to have impure and unholy thought life. Now that you are born again, you don’t have to stop listening to music at all just because you want to control your thought life.
Rather, you replace that void with heaven-filled and faith-filled worship songs. In that way, you have replaced that which was negative with that which is positive. And with time, you will realize that you have complete control over your thought life. Nature abhors vacuum, and so you do not overcome your sin by trying hard to get rid of it per se, but by replacing that habit with a new one and rechannelling that desire that leads you into that sin into a new fruitful positive endeavour. The way to overcome your sins and weaknesses is not by condemning yourself by concentrating on them. All you have to do is to find a different lifestyle, that which you seek to experience in Christ. Concentrate on that one instead and channel your efforts towards it. With time, you will realize that you have long overcome that sin that was once an issue in your life.
Find the positive replacement of that lifestyle that sponsors that sin in your life and give yourself to it. Do not live your Christian life trying to find out how close you can come to the doorstep of sin without actually sinning. Rather, concentrate on how far ou can go in living a holy life. Do not buy into the deceitfulness of sin. Stop telling yourself that, “The reason I am watching pornography is that I want to learn about sex.” Pornography is a business and its intent is not to teach you about sex but to make money out of your inordinate desire and lack of self-control for lust-filled contents.
The stronghold of every sin in your life are the deceptions and the lies you have believed about it. Deliver yourself from the lies of the sinful habits in your life. And walk in the truth of life that truly makes a man free. For if the Son has set you free, then you are truly free indeed.
